Civilians Come Under Fire in Kherson City During Flooding Evacuations

Civilian volunteers evacuating residents from flooded areas of coastal Kherson came under fire on Thursday, June 8, Ukraine’s interior ministry and the city mayor said, blaming the attack on Russian forces across the Dnipro River.

The interior ministry reported shelling at the evacuation sites around Korabelna Square just before 3 pm local time, saying there were three known victims.

State broadcaster Suspilne said a woman working for the State Emergency Service had died, citing a local administration office. It said the total number and status of victims was not immediately clear.

The broadcaster posted dramatic video of the moment a projectile fell in the water near rescuers in a boat.

Roman Mrochka, head of the Kherson city military administration, posted a video from the flooded area, saying evacuations were taking place “under fire.”

Earlier on Thursday, Suspilne reported that 1,900 people had been evacuated from the right bank of the Dnipro since the Nova Kakhovka dam collapsed on Tuesday. Credit: Suspilne News via Storyful
