Crews Sweep Atlixco Streets as Ash From Popocatepetl Rains Down

Sanitation crews worked to cleanup volcanic ash from the streets of Atlixco, Mexico, on Wednesday, May 24, after the Popocatepetl volcano erupted multiple times over the last few days.

This footage by SOAPAMA, the local sanitation agency, shows crews sweeping streets and clearing ash from sewers around el Zocalo de Atlixco.

Mexico’s National Center for Disaster Prevention said the yellow phase three warning was still in effect on Tuesday, following days of successive eruptions. They urged people to avoid the volcano “due to the danger of falling ballistic fragments.”

Air quality in the state of Puebla was being affected by the falling ash, local news reported. Local officials issued a ban on outdoor sporting activities and urged residents to wear masks in order to protect themselves from respiratory disease. Credit: SOAPAMA via Storyful
