Cyclone Mocha damages homes in Myanmar

STORY: The roofs of some buildings belonging to a local monastery, the Metta Garden Charitable School, appeared to have been completely destroyed by the cyclone’s powerful winds.

Residents along city streets could be seen removing debris and repairing damaged buildings.

Reuters was able to locate the area of damage from structures and buildings that matched satellite and file images.

At least three people have been killed, more than a dozen injured and over 1,000 buildings damaged since Cyclone Mocha made landfall in western Myanmar on Sunday (May 14) afternoon, state-run media reported.

Around 400,000 people were evacuated in Myanmar and Bangladesh before the cyclone hit, as authorities and aid agencies scrambled to avoid heavy casualties.
