Food Aid Delivered to Cyclone-Struck Myanmar

Food was delivered to cyclone-struck Rakhine State in Myanmar on Wednesday, May 17, the World Food Programme (WFP) said.

The cyclone, which hit the western state of Rakhine on Sunday, claimed at least 145 lives, according to Al Jazeera. The cyclone devastated the region, destroying homes and villages, satellite images showed on Tuesday.

At least 800,000 people in the region were in need of food assistance, the WFP estimated. Many aid groups were struggling to reach the at-need population due to travel restrictions upheld by Myanmar’s military junta, the New York Times reported.
