George Santos said to face federal charges: CNN

STORY: The embattled U.S. Congressman George Santos who admitted to lying about much of his resume and life story is facing criminal charges in a federal probe, according to a CNN report on Tuesday that cites three sources.

The exact nature of the charges against Santos are not immediately clear.

CNN said on Tuesday that the charges have been filed under seal.

The Republican lawmaker is expected to appear as soon as Wednesday in federal court in New York's Eastern District, according to CNN.

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District declined to comment.

Federal prosecutors have been examining false statement allegations in Santos' campaign filings.

Santos' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

However, the Associated Press reported that in a brief phone interview Santos had told them he was unaware of the charges.

Since winning his House seat in last November’s election, Santos has been under investigation in multiple jurisdictions.

The House Ethics Committee launched a probe looking into Santos in March including whether he engaged in illegal activity over his 2022 campaign.

Santos has refused to step down despite mounting pressure from within his own party, insisting that he is the elected representative for New York’s third district.
