Hundreds Feared Dead at Myanmar IDP Camps Following Cyclone Mocha

The confirmed death toll from Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar stood at 29 on May 16, the Irrawaddy reported; however, hundreds of people were feared dead in camps for internally displaced persons.

Several villages in Rakhine state were destroyed when Cyclone Mocha made landfall on May 14, Myanmar Now reported.

The outlet said “hundreds of people are missing and feared dead following flooding” in camps for displaced Rohingya people around Sittwe.

The Myanmar Army called on people in the camps to evacuate on Saturday, May 13, “but did not facilitate their exit” leaving “most […] unable to leave,” Myanmar Now said, citing locals.
