Migrants Cross Border at El Paso as Title 42 Set to Expire

Migrants continued to cross the US-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas, on May 10, a day before a pandemic-era immigration policy, Title 42, was set to expire.

Title 42 was used more than 2.8 million times since March 2020 by immigration authorities to expel migrants at the southern border without allowing them to request asylum, according to data from Customs and Border Protection.

US officials were expecting up to 13,000 migrants, more than double the current average, to cross the southern border every day once Title 42 lifts, according to reports.

Footage taken by El Paso-based photojournalist and academic Corinne Boudreaux shows migrants coming through Gate 42 east of downtown El Paso on Wednesday.

Additional footage taken on Tuesday shows Gate 42, the wall, a dumpster full of belongings, and a canal called “Playa Lateral", Boudreaux said. Credit: Corinne Boudreaux via Storyful
