Missile Wreckage Smolders After Another Night of Bombardment in Ukraine

Ukraine’s armed forces chief said on Thursday, May 18, that air defenses shot down 29 missiles overnight during the ninth wave of Russian attacks targeting Kyiv since the start of the month.

Beginning at 9 pm on Wednesday night and ending around 5 am on Thursday, Russian forces fired 30 missiles at Ukraine from land, sea, and air, Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Valeriy Zaluzhny reported.

He said 29 missiles were shot down.

One person was killed in Odesa where a missile landed on what military spokesman Serhiy Bratchuk described as “an industrial object.” Two people were injured, he said in a Telegram post.

No one was injured in the capital, National Police chief Andriy Nebytov said, warning of the danger of missile fragments and unexploded ordnance.

In total, Zaluzhny said Russian Tu-160 and Tu-95 aircraft fired 22 Kh-101 and Kh-555 cruise missiles; Black Sea ships fired six Kalibr style cruise missiles; and ground forces shot two Iskander-K cruise missiles.

It was the ninth attack on Kyiv since the start of May, the city military said, and comes two days after Russia fired 18 cruise missiles and Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles at the city. Credit: Andriy Nebytov via Storyful
