More Arrests Made in John Caldwell Shooting Investigation as Police Release CCTV Footage

Police in Northern Ireland made 11 new arrests on Friday, May 26, in relation to the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell in February, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said.

Nine men and two women aged between 21 and 72 years old were arrested under the Terrorism Act in Omagh and Coalisland, the PSNI said in a statement.

DCI John Caldwell was shot at a sports center near Killyclogher, County Tyrone, on February 22 while packing up after coaching a youth football team. He has since been released from the hospital and is “on the road to recovery”, according to the PSNI.

Police are treating the attack as terrorist-related and the primary line of inquiry remains that the New IRA was responsible.

In connection with the arrests on May 26 the PSNI also released additional CCTV footage of three cars believed to have been used by the gunmen and others involved on the night of and prior to the murder attempt on February 22.

In the footage, a blue Ford Fiesta with registration RLZ 9805, known as Fiesta 2, can be seen entering Tamnamore Park and Ride at 2 pm on February 22. A separate image shows Fiesta 2 on the Tamnamore roundabout. Fiesta 2 was found burned out on the Ardboe Industrial Estate on February 23. Police are appealing for information about its whereabouts following the sighting at 2 pm.

Another clip shows all three vehicles police suspect were used in the shooting: a black Mercedes Benz C-Class 4-door sedan, Fiesta 1, and Fiesta 2 traveling on Drumnakilly Road toward Omagh at 5:43 pm on February 22.
