Several killed after school roof collapses in Thailand

STORY: Emergency personnel worked through the early hours of the morning on Tuesday (May 23) to rescue injured victims from the wreckage and recovered the bodies of six people which included students, janitors, and parents.

The death toll later increased by one when a six-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries at the hospital after being rescued.

Residents in the area reported that the collapse took place amid a violent storm. Speaking to local media ThaiPBS, an unidentified resident said: “At first, I didn't know what it was, I didn't know it was the wind. It was like a battlefield because of the loud noises. I've been here for 40 years and have never experienced such an event.”

Local media also reported that a temporary relief centre is being established near the disaster site.

Thailand’s meteorological department announced the start of the monsoon season on Monday and issued a warning for heavy rain in upper Thailand throughout this week.
