NHL Three Stars: Luongo stops Lightning barrage; Habs erase big Canucks deficit

No. 1 Star: Roberto Luongo, Florida Panthers

The netminder came up big in a 39 save effort to pick up a 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. It was Luongo’s first shutout of the season. He hadn’t allowed fewer than two goals since Oct. 27 against the Colorado Avalanche. The victory tied Luongo with Glenn Hall for eighth on the NHL’s all-time wins list.

No. 2 Star: John Tavares, New York Islanders

The Islanders captain scored two goals and added one assist in a 5-2 beating of the Arizona Coyotes. Tavares has six points in his last three games and the Islanders have won three of four.

No. 3 Star: David Backes, St. Louis Blues

The Blues’ captain was solid in a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets. He scored two goals, added one assist and played a team-high 23:47 in the win. The outburst broke a four-game scoreless draught for Backes. The Blues had last two straight before the win.

Honorable Mention: The Montreal Canadiens erased a 3-0 deficit to beat the Vancouver Canucks, 4-3 in OT on a goal by forward David Desharnais. Teammate Tomas Fleischmann tied the game at the 16:52 mark of the third period. Montreal had lost two in a row before the comeback … Anaheim Ducks forward Carl Hagelin scored one goal and added two assists in a 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes … Ducks forward Shawn Horcoff scored a goal and added an assist … Hurricanes defenseman Noah Hanifin scored his first goal of his NHL career … Islanders forward Kyle Okposo notched three assists.
