10 things Liverpool fans want to see from Jurgen Klopp

1) Restore winning mentality

For too long, Liverpool have lacked a winning mentality. Of course, Brendan Rodgers brought the Reds to within three games of the Premier League title thanks to an outstanding sequence of victories. But it was the only significant winning run of his three-and-half year reign. Jurgen Klopp will need to get some wins under his belt quickly given a tricky fixture list.

2) Attract big names

Klopp’s predecessor was forced to scour the market for second-grade deals. Players like Mamadou Sakho, Roberto Firmino and Christian Benteke have the potential to be world class but require development. However, Klopp commands a greater aura in the football fraternity and the 48-year-old should be able to lure some big names to Anfield thanks to his reputation as a world-class coach. Just like his rivals Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and Arsene Wenger, Klopp will attract top players to the Premier League - and more importantly, Liverpool. After Rodgers’s transfer market failings, Reds fans will demand Klopp gets his signings right.

3) Improve current squad

The Northern Irishman was heavily criticised for his unconvincing signings. Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana and Joe Allen are just some of Rodgers’s expensive recruits who failed to make any impact at the Merseyside outfit. Klopp is capable of improving some of Rodgers’s more suspect signings. Just look at how the former Mainz manager turned Mario Gotze, Nuri Sahin and Shinji Kagawa into three of the Bundesliga’s best players.

4) Honesty

Rodgers often frustrated Liverpool supporters with his deluded post-match interviews. The 43-year-old would often cite his side’s tremendous character despite disappointing results. Klopp is more of a no-nonsense character and his honesty should win over Reds supporters.

5) Defensive solidarity

Liverpool conceded 53 goals in the Premier League last season. Their defence hasn’t made too many strides forward over the summer after conceding 10 goals in eight top-flight games this season. Mats Hummels blossomed into a world-class centre-half under Klopp’s guidance, and the German will need to improve the likes Martin Skrtel, Sakho and Lovren.

6) Make Liverpool more resilient

As well as working on their defence, Liverpool will also need to make the Reds a more resilient side. Too often, the 18-time English champions have been guilty of collapsing in crucial moments. Just look at their 2-1 loss to Chelsea or 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace at the back end of the 2013/14 season. Klopp’s Dortmund side were known as a robust, counter-attacking unit.

7) Champions League football

While Rodgers secured a return to Champions League football in 2014, Liverpool soon dropped down to Europe’s second-tier competition after a dreadful group-stage campaign. The Europa League won’t cut it for Reds supporters, who crave a perennial place at Europe’s top table after winning the European Cup on five occasions.

8) Bring through youth players

Liverpool have a rich pedigree of producing youth products and blooding them into the first-team. Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Jamie Redknapp, and more recently, Jon Flanagan, have successfully progressed through the ranks. Klopp will be tasted with restarting the conveyor belt of talent with one of the Premier League’s best academies at his disposal.

9) Restoring Anfield fortress

Liverpool lost 3-0 to West Ham United earlier this season. The Merseyside outfit won just 10 of their 19 games at Anfield last season. It proves Liverpool have lost their fear factor at home. Klopp will need to revert this run of Anfield form if the charismatic German is going to be a success.

10) The Premier League crown

The Holy Grail. Klopp transformed Dortmund into Bundesliga champions after previously struggling in the German top-flight. However, like Klopp, Rafael Benitez had won two top-flight crowns (in La Liga) before he took over the reins at Anfield, but the Spaniard fell just short in 2009. Rodgers went even closer in 2014. Klopp is Liverpool’s biggest appointment in the Premier League era – and he will be expected to turn the Reds into title contenders.
