Woman seriously injured after stabbing near school in Luton

A woman has been stabbed near a school in Luton, police have said.

The stabbing took place on Dunstable Road shortly after 8.30am on Tuesday.

The victim - who was seriously injured in the attack - has been taken to hospital.

Nearby Beech Hill Primary was locked down for about an hour "as a precautionary measure", a school spokesperson said in a statement issued by Luton Borough Council.

They said: "Bedfordshire Police is investigating the stabbing of a woman near the school in Dunstable Road.

"Following the incident, the school was on lockdown for approximately one hour, purely as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children and staff.

"Parents have been advised of the incident and emotional support is available to all children and staff who may require it."

Bedfordshire Police said a man has been arrested and is in police custody.

It said all children inside the school are safe and there is no wider threat to the public.

"Police will maintain a strong presence in the area for reassurance," the force said in a statement.

It has urged anyone with information about the stabbing to contact police.
