Sochi roundup: David Wise becomes first skiing halfpipe gold medal winner

• American David Wise became the first gold medal winner in halfpipe skiing Tuesday with a score of 92.00 on his first run. Wise, a 23-year-old from Reno, Nev., fell during his second run and had to wait to see if his first-run score would hold up. Canada's Mike Riddle took silver, and Kevin Rolland of France took bronze.

• The Dutch speedskaters have done it again. For the fourth time in these Olympics, the Netherlands swept the speedskating podium, this time in 10,000 meters. While the Dutch dominance wasn’t a big surprise, the fact that favorite Sven Kramer, who was looking for redemption in the event after being disqualified during the 2010 Vancouver Games, finished second to Jorrit Bergsma. The Dutch now have 20 medals — all in speedskating — and are at the top of the overall medal count with the United States.

• The Olympics had its first photo finish Tuesday when Norway's Emil Hegle Svendsen started celebrating his victory in the 15-kilometer mass start race a little prematurely and allowed French rival Martin Fourcade to make one last-ditch effort for the gold. Fourcade slid his ski forward and came within one-tenth of a second of stealing the gold medal.

• The United States is No. 1 and 3 in women’s bobsled heading into the finals Wednesday. The USA-1 bobsled team of Lauryn Williams and Elana Meyers led after the first two runs, and USA-2's Jamie Greubel and Aja Evans are in third. In between is Canada’s top team of Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse, who won gold in Vancouver in 2010.

• The United States will face the Czech Republic in the men’s hockey quarterfinals on Wednesday. The Czechs defeated Slovakia 5-3 on Tuesday, but the game was not without drama. Even though the Czech Republic took a 4-0 lead, Slovakia stormed back to make the score 4-3 with about 11 minutes remaining. The United States had a bye on Tuesday.

American Ted Ligety eyes gold as his first medal of the Sochi Games.

• Women’s bobsleigh, 7 a.m. ET

Two American teams are in the top three after the first two runs and are vying for medals.

• Men’s hockey, 8 a.m. ET

The United States faces the Czech Republic and Canada faces Latvia in the quarterfinals.

• Ladies' figure skating, 6 a.m. ET

The ladies, including Americans Ashley Wagner, Gracie Gold and Polina Edmunds, step onto the ice for the short program.

• Parallel giant slalom, 1:30 a.m. ET

The men and women compete for medals after a full day of qualifying.

• Ladies' 5000-meter speedskating, 4:30 a.m. ET

Can the Dutch continue their speedskating dominance?
