Ashlee Evans-Smith Issued Temporary Suspension for Banned Diuretic

Marion Reneau vs. Ashlee Evans-Smith Added to UFC Fight Night 82

Ashlee Evans-Smith not only lost her Octagon debut at UFC 181, she has now been temporarily suspended for testing positive for a banned substance.

Evans-Smith tested positive for the banned diuretic hydrochlorothiazide in drug testing done surrounding her fight with Raquel Pennington at UFC 181 on Dec. 6 in Las Vegas. The Nevada Athletic Commission during Monday's commission meeting formally issued Evans-Smith a temporary suspension pending a full disciplinary hearing.

Nevada Deputy Attorney General Christopher Eccles said it was his understanding that Evans-Smith was not contesting the issue.

Her manager, however, previously questioned why his client was being disciplined for testing positive for a diuretic, while UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones wasn't facing any action after testing positive for cocaine in an out-of-competition random drug screen.

“It's not performance-enhancing or anything,” McLeish told MMAFighting.com when addressing the diuretic. “I don't understand why they're talking about her doing diuretics, but Jon Jones did cocaine and nothing is happening to him. Cocaine is okay because it's out of competition? He was in training camp.”

Evans-Smith will likely find out what penalties she faces at Nevada's next regularly scheduled athletic commission meeting in February.
