Called to Military Service, Chan Sung Jung Out of Action for 2 More Years
Chan Sung Jung (aka the Korean Zombie) hasn’t fought in more than a year. He is now going to be sidelined from competing in the Octagon for another two years, after being called for his required military duty.
Jung, who hails from South Korea, is required to fulfill two years of mandatory military service, as are all other South Korean males aged 18 to 35. On Monday, Jung revealed via his Facebook page that he has been contacted by the government to begin his service on Oct. 20, which keeps him out as a UFC option for the next two years.
He last fought in August of 2013, losing via a fourth-round TKO stoppage in his bid to take the title from UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo. Jung dislocated his right shoulder in the fight.
He had been slate to return against Akira Corassani at UFC Fight Night 53 a little over a week ago, but had to pull out of the fight due to a training injury to the same shoulder that required rehabilitation.
In the meantime, Jung has been called to duty to comply with South Korea’s conscription – or required national service – requirement.
Jung’s manager, Brian Rhee, told MMAJunkie.com that while his fighter will become an active member of South Korea’s military on Oct. 20, he won’t be deployed in the field. Due to his injury history, he has been assigned to a government office for the duration of his conscription.
