Carlos Condit Looking for Redemption Against Johny Hendricks at UFC 158
UFC welterweight contender Carlos Condit is looking to bounce back from a loss in a big way by defeating Johny Hendricks and get back in the title mix in the UFC 158: St-Pierre vs. Diaz co-main event on Saturday night in Montreal.
“I’m looking for redemption. My last fight didn’t go the way that I wanted it to, and I’m looking to come back with a vengeance and put myself right back in title contention,” said Condit.
The former WEC welterweight titleholder was defeated by champion Georges St-Pierre in November at UFC 154. Hendricks is the top ranked UFC welterweight besides St-Pierre and UFC President Dana White has said that if Hendricks wins, he’ll be next in line for a title shot.
“Every fight is your biggest fight, and this fight is extremely important because I need to solidify myself as one of the top guys in the division,” said Condit. “I’m just trying to win this fight and put myself in position to possibly get a title shot.”
For his fight with St-Pierre, Condit didn’t have trainer Greg Jackson in his corner because of Jackson’s mutual relationship with Condit and St-Pierre. This time around, Condit and Jackson are back together.
“Game planning and strategizing with Greg is really a key to my game and my success the last couple of years, so it’s been nice having him back,” he said.
Johny Hendricks is on a five-fight winning streak, and Condit knows he has a tough fight on his hands.
“Johny Hendricks is a phenomenal wrestler, a great striker. He has made a great transition from wrestling into mixed martial arts and it’s going to be a really tough fight,” he said. “I’m definitely aware of what he can do. I have to be cognizant of his talents, his abilities.
“I think we’re going to put on an amazing show. Johny and myself really want this win, and we have a great skill set to make an exciting fight.”
