Former WEC Champ Paulo Filho Reportedly Shot in Brazil

Former WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho was reportedly shot in the leg during a house party on Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and rushed into surgery.

Filho reportedly had an altercation with a man at the party after an incident between Filho and a young woman. The man allegedly shot Filho in the leg and then left. Psicoticos por VT first reported the news, and sources close to the situation confirmed the story to MMAFighting.com reporter Guilherme Cruz.

The former champion was rushed to the hospital and into surgery, but as of the time of publication, there was no available update on his condition.

Filho rose to prominence during his Pride Fighting Championships tenure and then as the WEC middleweight champion. He fought and defeated the likes of Chael Sonnen, Melvin Manhoef, and Yuki Kondo, but has long suffered from substance abuse problems.

He was undefeated at 16-0 before losing in a WEC non-title fight to Sonnen in 2008.

His career has fallen into a steady downward spiral since leaving the WEC following the loss to Sonnen. Filho is 1-4-2 in his last seven bouts, and doesn't appear anywhere near resurrecting his once illustrious career.

He last fought at Bitetti Combat 19 in February, losing via unanimous decision to Andre Muniz.
