France Unveils Its High-Speed TGV 'Train Of The Future'

French railway chiefs have unveiled their new look high-speed train of the future - the TGV INOUÏ (also known as the TGV M).

A collaboration between AREP, Nendo, and SNCF Voyageurs, the new look TGV not only embodies the sophistication and comfort long associated with France’s famous high-speed trains and also integrates advancements in durability and energy efficiency.

One notable departure is the decision to paint the entire livery rather than relying on adhesive overlays.

This strategic move promises reduced maintenance downtime, a crucial factor in ensuring uninterrupted service for passengers.

The silvery livery also has a point beyond looking sleek as it enhances energy efficiency by boosting reflectivity.

As part of the pre-commercial launch phase, admission trials are underway to evaluate the TGV M’s performance under various conditions it may encounter during its operational life.

These trials are conducted at speeds of up to 320 km/h (198 m/h), and assess dynamic behaviour, electromagnetic compatibility, braking performance, noise levels, and traction capabilities.

When the original TGVs hit the tracks in 1981 they were Europe’s first high-speed service. They have subsequently broken world speed records for trains - reaching 574.8 km/h (357.2 mph) under test conditions.

The old TGV also holds the record average speed for a conventional journey, averaging 279.3 km/h (173.5 mph) from Champagne-Ardenne Station to Lorraine Station in 2007 (a record subsequently beaten by a Chinese train). The new TGV M is expected to enter service with the French train operator SNCF in 2025.
