Joe Riggs to Return from Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound at UFC on FOX 13

Let’s try this again. UFC veteran Joe Riggs, having fought elsewhere for nearly eight years, is due to return to the Octagon against Ben Saunders at UFC on FOX 13 on Dec. 13 in Phoenix.

It’s nothing short of astonishing that he will be returning that soon.

Riggs was initially slated to make his return to the Octagon against Paulo Thiago at UFC Fight Night 51 on Sept. 13 in Brazil. As quickly as the fight was made, however, it went away, courtesy of a bullet from Riggs’ own gun.

In late July, while in the midst of cleaning his gun, it went off, exploding through his left hand and then entering and exiting his left thigh. Now, less than two months later, he has a new date for his UFC return in his hometown.

Riggs (40-14, 1 NC) is riding a six-fight winning streak on his return trip to the Octagon. He last fought in November of last year, defeating Mike Bronzoulis under the Bellator banner.

Saunders (17-6-2) recently made his own return to the UFC in late August following a four-year absence. He defeated Chris Heatherly by landing a rarely successful omo plata submission, earning a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus for his efforts.

The UFC on FOX 13 headliner features former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos squaring off with Stipe Miocic at the U.S. Airways Center.
