Jose Aldo to Defend Belt Against Conor McGregor in UFC 189 Headliner
His coach first revealed that plans for Conor McGregor to challenge UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo in May were nixed, but McGregor on Friday revealed that the bout would indeed take place in July, as rumored.
Aldo will put his belt on the line against McGregor in the UFC 189 main event on July 11 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, capping off the promotion’s International Fight Week.
McGregor won a shot at the belt by drubbing Dennis Siver at UFC Fight Night 59 recently in Boston. Immediately after, UFC president Dana White indicated the title fight was likely to happen in Las Vegas in May.
“We’re looking at May in Vegas (for Aldo vs. McGregor),” said White at the UFC Fight Night 59 post-fight press conference.
But a short time later, McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, said in a radio interview in Dublin that the fight was likely to be pushed back to summer, which McGregor and the UFC have now confirmed.
McGregor (17-2) is currently on a 13-fight winning streak, coming off of the victory over Siver.

Aldo (25-1), however, is on an 18-fight streak. He never lost while under the WEC banner, where he won the featherweight title and carried it over to the Octagon. Aldo has won all seven of his bouts under the UFC banner, most recently defeating Chad Mendes last October.
