A man has been arrested and charged after two police officers were injured after reportedly being 'chased with a chainsaw' in Paisley.

Cops raced to a major incident on Glasgow Road on Monday afternoon following a disturbance involving a weapon. It's believed to have happened after a crash between a car and a stationery police vehicle.

Residents said a flurry of marked and unmarked police cars appeared within seconds of the alarm being raised. A 30-year-old man has now been charged in connection with the incident. He is due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

Two officers were injured and treated by paramedics at the scene. It is not being treated as a terror-related incident.

A source from within the force said: "Officers were driving down Glasgow Road when a black car smashed into them.

"The cop car came off the road and crashed into a wall.

"They got out of their cars to try and work out what's happened, next thing they know they are faced with a chainsaw.

"A two-one call was put out, that's the panic button, meaning an officer requires urgent assistance, and basically every officer close by drops what they're doing and races to the scene.

"The officers involved are obviously shaken up, but other than that they're okay.

"Just another reminder of how dangerous the job is, even for guys on diary duties."

Police Scotland have issued a statement saying there is no wider risk to the public.

Glasgow Road is closed between Buchlyvie Road and Allanton Avenue whilst investigations are carried out. Drivers are asked to avoid the area and use an alternative route.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 1pm on Monday, May 6, 2024, a disturbance involving a weapon occurred following a collision involving a car and a stationary police vehicle on Glasgow Road in Paisley. Two officers were injured and were treated by paramedics.

"A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with this incident. He is due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Tuesday, 7 May. A report will be forwarded to the Procurator Fiscal."
