UFC 179 Attendance: Aldo vs. Mendes Delivers in Rio de Janeiro

The UFC returned to Brazil this week for UFC 179: Aldo vs. Mendes 2. The championship rematch between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes was everything and more than billed.

The two top featherweights battled toe-to-toe and punch-for-punch for the better part of all five rounds, leading UFC president Dana White to call it, “(the) greatest featherweight championship fight I have ever seen in my life.”

Attendance for the fight at Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro was 11,415, a respectable number, but certainly not reflective of how good the fight eventually turned out to be.

The co-main event did little to warm up the crowd for the title fight, but Phil Davis none-the-less made another trip to Brazil to upset another Brazilian in his unanimous decision victory over Glover Teixeira. The win keeps Davis' name in the mix for light heavyweight movers and shakers, but after the fight, he called out returning former middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

If that fight eventually does happen, it could become one of the seven events that White confirmed would take place in Brazil in 2015.
