UFC 179 Fighter Bonuses: Aldo vs. Mendes Earn Fight of the Night

Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes rematched at UFC 179 in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night, and this fight was everything that their first fight wasn't, leading them to Fight of the Night honors.

“Greatest featherweight championship fight I’ve ever seen in my life,” said UFC president Dana White in announcing the post-fight honors that come with a $50,000 bonus for each fighter.

In their first fight, Aldo finished Mendes in the opening round. This time, they went toe-to-toe, Mendes giving every ounce of energy he had in the Octagon, pushing Aldo as hard as he's ever been pushed.

But in the end, it was Aldo that edged ahead throughout the bout, eventually earning a unanimous nod from the judges.

Fabio Maldonado staged a come-from-behind victory over Hans Stringer in one of the feature bouts on the pay-per-view portion of the card, and then mended fences with former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, while still in the Octagon. His TKO stoppage earned Maldonado one of two Performance of the Night awards.

The other Performance bonus went to Gilbert Burns, who lit up the UFC Fight Pass portion of the event with a first-round submission victory over Christos Giagos.
