UFC 182 Gate and Attendance Low, but PPV Expectations Running High
A lot of people were surprised to learn in the days leading up to Saturday night’s UFC 182: Jones vs. Cormier that the event was not sold out; far from it.
When all was said and done, even come fight time, UFC 182 did not sell out, according to UFC president Dana White.
The event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena drew a respectable crowd of 11,575 for a gate of $3.7 million, but those numbers certainly belies the hype surrounding the Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier main event. The fight was being looked at as potentially the best UFC fight of all time.
By contrast, UFC 168, which featured the rematch between Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva, drew 15,650 people for a gate of $6.2 million in the same MGM Grand Garden Arena.
It sounds as if UFC 182 may have been somewhat comparable to UFC 168 on the pay-per-view front, however, as White said before the event that he expected a PPV buyrate in the area of 750,000 buys.
At the post-fight press conference, he said his prediction was wrong and that they were trending towards blowing that number “out of the water.” He would not confirm whether or not that meant topping the one-million mark like UFC 168, but he certainly appeared happy with the direction the UFC 182 buyrate were headed.
